You must respond to the summons to prevent a suspension of your driver’s license or driving privileges. It is a crime to drive with a suspended or revoked license.
Please note:
In certain circumstances your appearance may still be required. The court will notify
you if your appearance is necessary.
Pleading "Guilty"
To plead guilty to the ticket as written:
Option 1 – No court appearance necessary
Complete and sign “Part A” of the ticket, and return to the court before appearance date on summons. You will receive a bill informing you of the fine amount.
Option 2 – Appear in court
Appear in court on appearance date indicated on summons.
Pleading "Not Guilty"
To plead not guilty to the ticket as written:
Option 1 – No court appearance necessary until notification of trial date
Complete and sign “Part B” of the ticket, and return to the court within 48 hours of
issuance date. You will be notified of trial date.
Option 2 – Appear in court
Appear in Court on appearance date indicated on summons.
Pleading "Guilty with explanation"
To plead guilty with explanation: appear in court on date indicated on summons.

Summons not answered, fines not paid, or non-appearance for traffic trials will result in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) being notified to suspend NYS drivers’ license or privileges to drive in NYS. Drivers found driving with a suspended license will be charged with a misdemeanor and must appear in court.
